French-Canadian writer-director François Girard’s sixth film spans three centuries of Quebecois history. It begins with an archaeological dig in a contemporary sports stadium, the film then takes the audience back to the 17th century and a romance between a young Algonquin woman and a French trapper, before wading into the rebellions of 1837, when French patriots fought the English redcoats.
